Maruia is a small widespread settlement in the Buller District of the West Coast regionon the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The settlement is located in the valley of the Maruia River , around 30 km east of Reefton . To the west of the valley rise the up to 1749  m high Victoria Range . The New Zealand State Highway 65 runs through the valley and the settlement and meets the New Zealand State Highway 7 around 16 km south in Springs Junction .

economy

The settlement lives from agriculture and dairy farming.

education

There is a small coeducational elementary school for grades 1 to 8 in the settlement. The school had 22 students in 2015.
