Maruia Springs is a wellness park in the Buller District of the West Coast regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
Maruia Springs is located about 3 miles west of Lewis Pass between the banks of the Maruia River and New Zealand State Highway 7 , which is used to reach the wellness park. The next larger town is Reefton , around 48 km northwest of the springs.
Thermal bath
Maruia Springs is a hot spring bath. The medicinal water containing sodium borate is piped from thermal springs on the north bank of the river into several swimming pools in the park and kept at temperatures between 36 and 42 ° C. Bath houses and accommodation for the spa guests are also available in the complex.
history
The area was already populated by Māori before the arrival of European settlers . One of the traditional trade routes for the gemstone Pounamu ran along here, the river was an important source of food and the subject of disputes because of the eels and wekaralli found here .
