Lewis River , looking south

The Lewis River is an approximately 18 km long river in the Hurunui District , in the north of the Canterbury region on the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The headwaters of the Lewis River are located at an altitude of 875  m east of the New Zealand State Highway 7 in the area of the Lewis Pass . The river runs largely parallel to the State Highway to the south and flows into the Boyle River after 18 kilometers . The river is accompanied on its east side by the mountain range of the up to 1736  m high Libretto Range and on its west side by the mountain range, which finds its highest point in the 1870  m high Mount Technical .

Flora and fauna

The catchment area of the Lewis River preferably consists of beech forest , which is administered as the Lewis Pass National Reserve by the Department of Conservation . There is limited trout fishing in the lower part of the river. Overall, the river is not particularly suitable for trout because it has too few pools.

Sylvia Flats Hot Pools

1.2 km south of the confluence of the Nina River into the Lewis River and 2.9 km north of the confluence of the Lewis River into the Boyle River were the warm rising springs in the river bed of the Lewis River, which the locals call Sylvia Flats Hot Pools , that were valued by insiders. The springs were spilled in landslides in January 2017 after heavy rains softened a slope on the river.
