geography

The headwaters of the Boyle River are located around 420 m to the east, below the summit of the 1737  m high Trovatore , a mountain in the Opera Range . The river rises from a small lake and initially flows around 3 km in an easterly direction, then swings in a generous curve to the south and follows the valley through which the St James Walkway leads for around 13 km in a south direction. After another change of direction in a westerly direction, the Lewis River flows into the Boyle River after a total of 28 kilometers . After the two rivers have merged, the Boyle River flows south again and after the Doubtful River has brought its waters from the west, the Boyle River flows a few km further south into the Hope River, which flows east .

The Boyle River can be reached via the New Zealand State Highway 7 , where the Lewis River crosses the bridge and flows into the Boyle River .

Boyle Village

At the confluence of the Lewis River and the Boyle River is the small settlement of Boyle Village , where the Boyle River Outdoor Education Center is located, where young people can gain outdoor experience under supervision .

St James Walkway

The St James Walkway is an approximately 66 km long circular hiking trail for a five-day hiking tour, the path of which , coming from the Anne River over the Anne Saddle , follows the Boyle River for around 21 km downstream until it meets the Lewis River . The three mountain huts Rokeby Hut , Boyle Flat Hut and Magdalen Hut are on this path .
