Culverden is a small town with a population of 426 (2013) in the Hurunui District of the Canterbury regionon the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

Culverden is centrally located in the Amuri Plain , around 43 km north of Amberley , around 80 km southwest of Kaikoura and 35 km from the east coast of the South Island. Through the village leading New Zealand State Highway 7 , the Culverden in the northwest of Reefton , near the west coast and in the south of Waipara , near the east coast, combines. To the northeast, adjacent to Culverden , are Rotherham , 11 km away and Waiau , 20 km away.

history

Culverden got its name from Henry Young , a settler from Tunbridge Wells to the county of Kent , England , who bought for his flock of sheep country and named his settlement of his estate in England.

The place itself was founded in 1886 with the construction of the railway, got a train station and was a stagecoach station for the region. Centrally located in the Amuri Plain , the place got economic importance and in 1890 the seat of the Amuri County Council, which it kept until 1989 until the state-wide reorganization of the administrations.

earthquake

The location was also affected by the Kaikoura earthquake on November 14, 2016, which had its epicenter 3.6 km southwest of Waiau and thus near Culverden . But in contrast to Waiau to the northeast, the damage in Culverden was limited. There was no major damage to the building. Even the town's Amuri County Building and Saint Andrew Church , both of which are made of stone, remained largely intact.
