Motiti Island is an island in the Bay of Plenty on the North Island of New Zealand . It is located 21 km northeast of Tauranga and 9.4 km northeast of Papamoa Beach .
The relatively flat island is 10 km² in size. In the 1961 census, the island was inhabited by 61 people, 42 Maori and 19 Europeans. The main line of business is agriculture.
The island was discovered by James Cook as the first European on November 2, 1769 .
