Kalety [ kaˈlɛtɨ ] ( German Kalet ) is a town with 8,700 inhabitants in Poland . It is located 25 km northwest of Tarnowskie Góry (Tarnowitz) on the Malapane and belongs to the Powiat Tarnogórski , Silesian Voivodeship .

history

Kalety was founded in 1365. At this time the first iron hammer was operated in the place on the Malapane, the place is one of the oldest smelter locations in Upper Silesia . After Silesia became Prussian in 1742 , the mining and metallurgy industry was modernized. One of the pioneers was the Bohemian smelter Johann Friedrich Koulhaas. In the neighboring town of Kutschau (Kuczów), Koulhaas had already tried to produce coke for blast furnace firing from Upper Silesian coal . In 1777 he had the first fresh fire for steel production built in Upper Silesia on Kutschauer Flur . In 1789, Koulhaas succeeded in refining steel with coal in his steel hammer. Around the hut to companies settled in for the production of steel products and the company town emerged colony steel hammer.

In the middle of the 19th century, the focus of steel production shifted to the coal field, so that the importance of the Kalet and the steel hammer declined. The wood processing industry became a new focus. Guido von Henckel-Donnersmarck , who owned the extensive forests on the Malapane, had the hut converted into a sawmill in 1870 and a cellulose factory built between 1882 and 1884 , to which a paper mill was added a little later.

Kalet was connected to the railway network in 1848 . In 1926, the long-distance connection between Katowice and Gdynia was added to the connection to Lublinitz , Tarnowitz and Beuthen . The place grew into an industrial community.

The place was in the part of the Lublinitz district that came to Poland in 1922.

In 1933 Kutschau (Kuczów), Jendryssek (Jedrysek), Truschütz (Truszczyce) and Drahthammer (Drutarnia) were incorporated. Between 1939 and 1945 the place was occupied by Germany. In 1940 the name of the Stahlhammer colony became the name of the community.

After the Second World War , Stahlhammer became Polish and was given the place name Kalety . Kalety has been a city since 1951. Over three quarters of the 52 km² urban area are forests.

Even after the war, the industrial focus was on paper and cellulose production . In 1968 the plant employed 1,800 workers, in 1930 it was half. The paper mill is now closed.
