Rail network
Rail network refers to the entirety of the interlinked rail- bound traffic routes ( railway lines ) that exist in a limited area, a geographic or political region . The degree of access is characterized by the network density . The network structure is represented by the line network plan . For some time now, the route networks for passenger transport have mostly been operated in regular intervals and divided into lines (with line numbers ).
A distinction is usually made between the following sub-networks:
- Local transport network : regional train , light rail , tram network , subway , rapid transit network
- Long-distance network : high-speed network
- Freight network
"Rail network 2025/2030 - expansion concept for efficient rail freight transport in Germany" is the title of a study commissioned by the Federal Environment Agency that was published in August 2010.
