The Coal Mainline (Polish Magistrala węglowa ) is a railway line in Poland that connects the Upper Silesian industrial area and the coal mining and industrial areas of Częstochowa and Rybnik with the port of Gdynia . The main hubs and intermediate stations are: Herby Nowe, Chorzew Siemkowice, Zduńska Wola Karsznice, Ponętów, Inowrocław and Bydgoszcz- Wschód.

Its completion in 1933, together with the construction of the port in Gdynia, marked the end of the efforts of Poland, which was re-established after 1918, to connect its most important industrial area with a Baltic Sea port as directly as possible, without being dependent on the German Reich and the Free City of Danzig . Since the German invasion of Poland in 1939 and Poland's shift to the west after the Second World War, the northern part of the route between Maksymilianowo near Bydgoszcz and Gdynia has lost its importance, as traffic has mainly been routed via Gdansk again since then .

history

prehistory

The idea of ​​the victorious powers of the First World War that the port of the newly created Free City of Gdańsk would fulfill the function of the port of the reestablished state of Poland proved to be illusory from the start because of the conflicting interests of the Gdańsk community and the Polish state. In 1921, a railway connection from Kokoszki (Kokoschken), located on the Stara Piła (Altemühle) –Danzig Langfuhr line, to Gdynia , which was on the Danzig – Lauenburg line, was created, connecting the Polish Baltic coast with the rest of the Polish route network bypassing Danzig produced and mainly served military purposes. In 1924 the Polish government decided to build the port in Gdynia and an efficient railway connection from there to the Polish interior.

Before the First World War, there had been a railway connection from Upper Silesia to Danzig within the German Reich , which ran via Kreuzburg , Ostrowo , Jarotschin , Gnesen , Hohensalza and Bromberg . After the new demarcation, this line was largely in Poland, with the exception of the local passage from Bytom , which was avoided in 1925 by the construction of an eastern bypass, and the so-called "Kreuzburger Korridor", which was cut off in 1926 by the construction of the Kalety – Podzamce line . These measures were to be seen in connection with the German-Polish customs war , which no longer allowed Poland to transport its coal across German territory. In 1924 a Polish-French company had already been commissioned to build a more direct connection from Kalety via Wieluń and Opatówek to Inowrocław , but this did not succeed.

Construction of the route

Encouraged by the upturn in the world economy, the Polish state decided in 1926 to build a continuous line from Upper Silesia to Gdynia on its own, the costs of which were to be covered by the proceeds of the Polish State Railways . At that time, the section from Chorzów Batory to Herby Nowe and the end of the line to Gdynia built in 1921 were available. A section of the line from Inowrocław to Nowa Wieś Wielka that has existed since 1872 and a section of the line from Kościerzyna to Kartuzy that has existed since 1901 were included .

The line was largely single-track completed in the years 1928 to 1930; but with the exception of the Zduńska Wola Karsznice – Inowrocław section, which could no longer be financed by the Polish state due to the global economic crisis . As a result, the French-Polish Railway Company (Francusko-Polskie Towarzystwo Kolejowe SA), consisting of the Polish bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego and the French Banque des Pays du Nord, was set up in Paris for the construction of this section and the operation of the entire route in 1931 and the French company Schneider et Cie , which completed the missing section in 1933.

Current state

As far as Maksymilianowo ( Maxtal ) the line is electrified and double-tracked, but (see diagram on the right and article Chorzów – Tczew railway line ) local passenger transport is often discontinued and often sparse on the other sections. The Gdańsk Osowa – Gdynia Główna section was integrated into the PKP Szybka Kolej Miejska w Trójmieście in 2015 . For this purpose, a connection line from Gdańsk Wrzeszcz via the Lech Wałęsa Airport in Gdańsk to Gdańsk Osowa was built, partly on the old, now disused railway line Gdańsk – Stara Piła .
