Rubielos de Mora ( Catalan : Rubiols de Mora ) is a small Spanish town in the southeast of the province of Teruel in the autonomous community of Aragon . The entire place was recognized in 1980 as a national cultural asset ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) in the category Conjunto histórico-artístico .

location

Rubielos de Mora is located almost 60 kilometers (driving distance) southeast of the provincial capital Teruel in the mountains of the Sierra de Gúdar at an altitude of about 930 meters above sea level. d. The neighboring village of Mora de Rubielos, which is well worth seeing, is only 12 kilometers to the north-west. Rubielos de Mora recorded the highest population in its history (over 2,000) in the second half of the 19th century.

economy

Agriculture and tourism (in winter also ski tourism) are the main sources of income for the place. For the surrounding farmsteads and small villages, it is an important handicraft and trading center.

history

former collegiate church of Santa María la Mayor

The first documentary mention comes from the year 1194 - d. H. from the time of the Christian reconquest ( reconquista ) of the entire area from the hands of the Moors . It seems that the place arose around a - no longer existing - castle ( castillo ) and was surrounded by a city wall.

Attractions

  • The main attraction of the place are the narrow medieval streets in the center - the medieval-looking stone houses provide shade in summer so that the heat has little chance of spreading.
  • The town hall ( ayuntamiento or casa consistorial ) was the former stock exchange ( lonja ) of the place. It is a Renaissance building from the 16th century with a largely arched inner courtyard, which also served as a market hall for valuable goods (fabrics, etc.).
  • The north tower of the west facade of the former collegiate church ( ex-colegiata ) Santa María la Mayor , which is completely unadorned except for a low-lying Renaissance portal, has two baroque lantern tops stacked one on top of the other .
  • Several hermit chapels ( ermitas ) can be found scattered throughout the village.
  • Two medieval city gates ( Puerta de San Antonio and Puerta del Carmen ) are also worth mentioning.

Others

In the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) in Barcelona there is a painted and carved altarpiece from the late Gothic period (approx. 1468), which formerly belonged to the Augustinian monastery of Rubielos de Mora. It is in Flemish tradition and is attributed to the painter Joan Reixach , whose helpers made the surrounding carving. The program of images on the altar can certainly be described as confused - its main panel shows the Adoration of the Magi , above it a panel with the death of the Virgin . At the bottom left is a portrait of St. Peter , above the depiction of the Archangel Michael as a dragon slayer. St. Anna , the mother of Mary, with her grown-up daughter in her arms, who in turn holds the baby Jesus in her arms ( Anna selbdritt ); above it the martyrdom of St. Sebastian . The predella contains scenes of the passion , but also the resurrection and ascension of Christ . Some of the outer panels, in which donor portraits and figures of saints (including St. Anthony with a pig at his side) can be seen, seem to be missing, but overall the altar is full of expressiveness and color and is in a very good state of preservation.
