Belmonte de San José ( Catalan : Bellmunt de Mesquí ) is a Spanish municipality in the province of Teruel in the Autonomous Region of Aragón . It is located around 23 kilometers south of Alcañiz in the valley of the Río Mezquín in the Comarca Bajo Aragón (Baix Aragó) in the predominantly Catalan-speaking area of Franja de Aragón . On January 1, 2019, the community had 113 inhabitants.
Toponymy and History
The place was first mentioned in 1232 as Belmonte and was given the addition of de Mezquín in 1916, which was changed in 1980 to the existing addition (after a hermitage in the municipality).
