Arens de Lledó (in Catalan Arenys de Lledó ) is a Spanish municipality in the comarca of Matarraña in the province of Teruel in the autonomous region of Aragon . It has 211 inhabitants ( INE January 1, 2019) and covers an area of ​​34 square kilometers.

This place is located in the middle of the Franja de Ponent .

Arens de Lledó is a few minutes' drive away between Horta de Sant Joan Catalonia (known as the starting point for tours in the Els Ports Nature Park and here Picasso is said to have found inspiration for Cubism during his stay) and Calaceite , the cultural capital of Matarraña . The village of Arens de Lledó is located in the easternmost part of the province, in a hilly area by the Algars river , which marks the border with the Terra Alta and Catalonia. history

A first human settlement is proven for the Bronze Age. Remains of the old city wall exist from the Middle Ages and six kilometers away, at the chapel of St. Hippolytus (Sant Pol), there is the base of a medieval column. There is also a Templar paw cross at this location. This holy place is still a center of pilgrimage today and a procession takes place every year on the first Saturday in May. Tradition says that this place was visited by women to ask for fertility. The path to the chapel is lined with ancient cypress trees.

The Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939 also shook this village.

Due to the post-war turmoil and the great cold spells, there was a migration to Barcelona and the surrounding area as well as to Valencia in search of new employment opportunities .

  • The Ermita de Sant Pol is six kilometers away from Arens de Lledô, but still within the municipal limits. Flanked by centuries-old cypress trees is the chapel of St. Hippolytus (Sant Pol) on the former medieval hermitage . On the first Saturday in May there is a pilgrimage with a mass in the chapel.
  • The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is worth seeing, a Gothic building (15th and 16th centuries) with a passage arch which dates from the Middle Ages. economy

Agriculture is the main source of income, mainly from the harvest of olives, almonds and grapes. Many companies are based on tourism. There is a winery producing high quality wines and a few small shops and an agricultural cooperative .

Demographics

Due to immigration from other parts of Spain as well as from other European countries and North America, the population of this municipality has increased in recent years. Half of the local school, with Spanish and Catalan as the language of instruction, is attended by local and the other half by foreign children.

Algars

The Algars River forms the border between Catalonia and Aragón . It is a tributary of the Río Matarraña , natural pools and eroded rock formations mark the course of the Algars. Live in him and a.
