Urrea de Gaén is a municipality ( municipality ) with 435 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the Bajo Martín district of the province of Teruel in the autonomous region of Aragon in Spain . It is the smallest parish of the Ruta del Tambor y el Bombo, known for its drum processions during Holy Week ( Semana Santa ) .
Semana Santa
The Semana Santa in Urrea de Gaén is calmer and more relaxed compared to other places on the Ruta del Tambor ( Alcañiz or Calanda ). The major events of Holy Week are the midnight between Holy Thursday and Good Friday taking place Romper la hora (smash the hour) and the subsequent processions. From this moment on until Holy Saturday at 8 p.m., large groups drum continuously. The most important processions are the rosary procession around the events of the capture of Jesus on the Mount of Olives from 0:30 a.m. on Good Friday and on the evening of the same day at 9 p.m. the procession for the funeral of Jesus. On Holy Saturday at 11 a.m., a procession to the so-called Calvary is held.
Infrastructure
Urrea de Gaén does not have a hotel. The next places to stay are in the neighboring communities of Híjar , Albalate del Arzobispo and La Puebla de Híjar . There are two pubs, two grocery stores, two butcher shops, a bakery, an electronics store, a hairdressing salon, a clothing store (with tunics for the Semana Santa), a pharmacy, a beverage store and a bank branch.

Urrea de Gaén is the birthplace of the doctor, philosopher and writer Pedro Laín Entralgo , who was born there in 1908. He was President of the Real Academia de la Lengua Española . The house where he was born is in the central Plaza de España .
The Carlist general Juan Cabañero y Esponera was also born here. He is best known as the commander of a failed attack on Saragossa on March 5, 1838, in whose memory the Cincomarzada festival is still celebrated in the Aragonese capital.
