La Fresneda ( Catalan : La Freixneda ) is a Spanish municipality in the province of Teruel in the Autonomous Region of Aragón . It is located between Valjunquera and Valderrobres in the Comarca Matarraña (Matarranya) in the predominantly Catalan-speaking area of Franja de Aragón . On January 1, 2019, the community had 438 inhabitants.

history

The place came to the Order of Calatrava after it was conquered in the Reconquista in 1170 . During the War of the Spanish Succession in 1706 it was in the hands of the Habsburg troops. The castle and the fortifications were razed during the First Carlist War . In 1936 the place sided with the Republicans. At the end of the Spanish Civil War , many residents emigrated, others joined the resistance.
