history
In the Reconquista , Monroyo was conquered by the Kingdom of Aragon in 1132 and definitely in 1169. In 1185 the place came to the Archdiocese of Tarragona . It was later given to the Order of Calatrava , who in 1209 took possession of the festivals that were already important during the Moorish times. Monroyo had the right to hold weekly markets since 1257, and a fair since 1382. During the War of the Spanish Succession , Monroyo was sacked and looted by Bourbon troops in 1705. In 1791 the municipality of Torre de Arcas was separated. In the Carlist Wars , Monroyo was attacked in 1836 and burned down in 1839; numerous buildings were not rebuilt later.
