Romería

Romería refers to a religious procession or pilgrimage in the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America that ends or takes place at a holy place, a pilgrimage chapel or a hermitage . The Portuguese name is Romaria or Romeiro .

The word Romería is derived from Romero , a name for a traveler to Rome or a pilgrim who visited Rome as one of the three most important pilgrimage destinations of the Middle Ages, alongside Santiago de Compostela and Jerusalem .

The Romería can be done on foot, on horseback and cart, on rafts or by car. The word designates both processions that take place in one day and ramparts that can stretch over a long period of time. In a figurative sense, Romería also describes a folk festival or a crowd.

One of the most famous Romerías in Spain takes place in El Rocío , Almonte , Huelva since 1758 at Pentecost. Other well-known ones are in Málaga , Jaén , Madrid , Valencia and the Canary Islands . In Latin America one finds Romerías u. a. in Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Mexico as well as in Costa Rica.
