Self-evaluation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Self-evaluation is a specific approach to evaluation with smooth transitions to quality management . It is characteristic that the evaluation is not carried out by external evaluation experts, as in the case of external evaluation, but by those people ("practitioners") who are responsible for the conception and / or implementation of the object of evaluation in the field of practice. It is less important that all concrete activities that arise in an evaluation are carried out by the self-evaluating practitioners, but rather that they, as owners of the process, have a significant influence on evaluation goals, questions, design, implementation and use of evaluation results, or even act as a client, decision-maker and / or evaluation team for the evaluation.

The aim of self-evaluations is usually to improve the practice as directly as possible on the basis of systematically obtained data. Self-evaluation is therefore often designed in the form of a "self-evaluation cycle". The results should be implemented immediately in the form of practical action consequences, which then form the starting point for renewed self-evaluation activities.

Self-evaluation can be carried out on different levels. A distinction must be made between individual self-evaluation, in which individuals systematically evaluate aspects of their own work, and organizational self-evaluation, which covers aspects of the work of an entire organization or institution. The latter form is often referred to as internal evaluation, but the term is not congruent with that of self-evaluation, since internal external evaluations are also conceivable. Various methods are used in self-evaluation: Multifunctional methods that aim to change practice and at the same time collect data without additional effort are particularly suitable. Classical methods such as interviews, group surveys and questionnaires can also be considered, the latter in particular requiring a great deal of additional effort. The self-evaluation tool SEIS ( self-evaluation in schools ) is tailored to the needs of schools . In addition to the internal evaluation of schools, external evaluations take place, e. B. the school inspection .

History and fields of practice

In the German-speaking discussion, the concept of self-evaluation has had its own tradition since the late 1980s, triggered by the work of Maja Heiner and Joachim König in the field of social work . In the 1990s it found its way into schools as part of model tests . In further training the discussion takes place v. a. in the context of approaches such as TQM , EFQM and similar approaches. In the university area , self-evaluations are mainly used in the context of internally designed quality management approaches or as a sub-element of mixed internal and external quality procedures.

For a number of years DeGEval discussed the development of its own standards for self-evaluation. As a result, the recommendations for the application of the standards for evaluation in the field of self-evaluation appeared in 2004 .
