history

In ancient times the city was called Antioch, and was distinguished from Antioch on the Orontes by the addition "near Pisidia" or later "in Pisidia".

According to Acts of the Apostles , Paul visited Antioch near Pisidia and founded a Christian community there. The first visit was possibly motivated by the fact that Sergius Paullus , who had recently been converted by him, came from Antioch near Pisidia. Whether Paul also later visited Antioch when he was traveling through "Galatia" is controversial in theological research.

  2. At the time the Acts of the Apostles was written, the city was in the Phrygian part of the province of Galatia. Later manuscripts sometimes read "in Pisidia" instead of "near Pisidia", which corresponded to the circumstances of their time.
  3. According to Breytenbach: Paulus and Barnabas in the province of Galatia is the overwhelming majority of theologians only in German-speaking countries of the opinion that Paul was instead in the Galatia region, which was further north.
