The Mining Museum Kupferberg is a German museum in Kupferberg (district of Kulmbach, Bavaria). It shows the history of mining in this town from the Middle Ages to the present day. It was created in 1998 by the Bergbau-Museum Kupferberg e. V. founded.

Mining in Kupferberg

Bamberg's bishop Heinrich II von Sternberg made Kupferberg a town in 1326, and today it is one of the smallest towns in Bavaria. The reason for the town elevation was the copper ore finds , which were processed on site. Copper was extracted until the first half of the 20th century. The museum shows the development of mining on site and shows tools, equipment and common to unusual finds. The entrance to a drainage tunnel can also be viewed on the site. The location of many of the tunnels is unknown due to the lack of preserved archive documents. A historical circular hiking trail leads towards Wirsberg . In the immediate vicinity there are large quarries where diabase is extracted. The Kupferberg visitor mine on the former mining site of the St. Vitus colliery in Kupferberg was completed and inaugurated on April 19, 2015. The foundation stone was laid on November 13, 2009.

Exhibition in the museum

The focus of the exhibition are the exhibits of the minerals and ores from the local mining around Kupferberg, as well as the tools of the time and the diabase mining in the surface area at the entrance to the village. The museum was opened in 2000 in the historic stable building. Since September 2001 the association has been a member of the "Landesverband Bayerischer Bergmanns-, Knappen- und Hüttenmännischer Vereine e. V. "

The museum offers a special concept and children's worksheets for school and children's groups, as well as solution sheets for teachers. Groups can book a guided tour of the museum.
