The Bayreuth – Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg railway is a single-track main line in Bavaria . After the Schlömen curve went into operation , it has been a section of the so-called Saxony-Franconia Mainline from Dresden to Nuremberg since June 10, 2001 .
history
The line from Neuenmarkt to Bayreuth was the first Bavarian railway line to be built under a contract with the state (Lease Railway Act). The city of Bayreuth financed the construction of the route and then leased it to the Bavarian state.
On November 28, 1853, it was opened by the Royal Bavarian State Railway as a branch line of the Ludwig-Süd-Nord-Bahn and one of the first branch lines in Bavaria. In 1905 the leased line was nationalized.
A set of points too early led to a train accident in Harsdorf station on August 20, 1966, with five seriously injured and two slightly injured. A km with about 100 / h from Bayreuth coming fast train, a train set of class VT 24 , crashed into a standing on the wrong track steam locomotive . The leading railcar and the locomotive were badly damaged.
From December 28, 1896, the Neuenmarkt– (Bad) Berneck railway branched off at Schlömen and was extended to Bischofsgrün in 1898 . From Neuenmarkt to Schlömen, where the block was turned into a signal box, the trains used the track of the leased railway . On the Pentecost holidays in 1986, a multiple unit train with several passenger cars ran the route for the last time. The section from Schlömen to Lanzendorf , which was last used by freight traffic, was finally closed on June 30, 2006.

Route description
The line leaves the Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg station in a southerly direction and soon afterwards swings to the southwest, first following the Laubenbach and then the White Main for almost two kilometers each. On the outskirts of Schlömen, the former branch line branches off to Bischofsgrün , the switch and an adjoining track section are still there. The Schlömen stop was only set up in 1896 and is no longer in operation.
The next station and first train station is Trebgast , where State Road 2183 crosses the route twice in quick succession at the same level. The track on the house platform and the loading track have disappeared, only the long crossing track still exists. Train crossings take place here as planned. The wing signals were only dismantled in 2012, and the lever signal box was shut down on March 22, 2012. Like the Harsdorf lever control unit, it will be transferred to a museum, while the Bindlach lever control unit will serve as a spare parts donor.
The route follows the state road to Bayreuth on the eastern edge of the wide valley of the Trebgast river . Halfway to Harsdorf , the train passes the road to Neudrossenfeld, which is secured by a manned level crossing, and then crosses under the A 70 motorway parallel to the road .
In Harsdorf earlier - coming from Bayreuth before the level crossing - a long industrial track branched off to the local malt factory, which made Harsdorf the most important intermediate station on the line. This track was no longer used in the 1980s and dismantled in the early 1990s. The Harsdorf station is now also only two-track. The route already runs from northeast to southwest and swings to the south after the Ramsenthal stop. Then the So-da bridge is crossed, which for years was a symbol of expensive bad planning. The municipality of Gemein was given the shortest route to Bindlach and Bayreuth when the level crossing was closed .
In the Bindlach train station, the trapeze of switches with two freight tracks and the goods shed, which were once often found in the area, no longer exist either. The decommissioned lever interlocking from 1901 was still in place in May 2012 and was one of the last examples of its kind in Upper Franconia. In 2006 a new platform was built for track 1 approx. 50 meters south of the station building, but it cannot be reached directly from the station. The side platform on the opposite through track 2 went into operation at a new location in autumn 2015 and has been used mainly in both directions since then.
The Bayreuth urban area is reached south of the Bindlach train station. There are goods sidings here (including a garbage transfer station) and a tank loading ramp that was used until the 1990s. The line coming from the east from Warmensteinach used to run parallel and independently to Bayreuth Central Station . During the construction of Hofer Strasse a few years ago, when a new bridge was built, it was introduced into the leased railway shortly before it . Since then, parallel entries and exits on both routes are no longer possible.
Overall, the subgrade runs relatively flat without any noteworthy slopes and inclines. The lowest point is Trebgast train station, the highest point is at Bindlach. The smallest curve radius can be found on the northern outskirts of Trebgast. Level crossings exist in several places, they are largely secured by traffic lights and barriers. The only noteworthy artificial structure is the three-arched sandstone bridge over the White Main.
Schlömener curve
In Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg, the direction of travel had to be changed by 2001 in order to transport the trains over the famous inclined plane towards Hof. With the opening of the Schlömen curve for the timetable change on June 10, 2001, which enables the eastern bypass of the Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg station, the connection to the north-east has improved considerably. Thanks to the former ICE line 17 ( Dresden - Nuremberg every hour, the trains alternating via Bayreuth or Marktredwitz ), ICE TD multiple units with tilting technology of the 605 series ran for two years .
The city of Marktredwitz tried in 1998 to legally prevent the construction of the Schlömener curve, but was unsuccessful by the Federal Administrative Court .
Current situation
In Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg there are connections to both Bamberg and Hof . About the Schlömener curve which are leased track and the inclined plane since 2001 directly connected. Today there are continuous trains between Bayreuth and Hof, as well as via Kulmbach to Bamberg (- Würzburg) and Coburg (- Bad Rodach).
The IRE Franken-Sachsen-Express Nürnberg-Bayreuth-Dresden (since December 2007 every two hours) ran there from December 2006 to December 2013 after no trains at all had used the Schlömen curve as planned. The RE Nürnberg – Bayreuth – Hof, which operates every two hours, has been operating here since December 15, 2013 .

German Steam Locomotive Museum
The German Steam Locomotive Museum (DDM) is located in Neuenmarkt with a large number of exhibits. In addition to the presentation of its static exhibition, the DDM organizes special trips at irregular intervals, mostly in cooperation with other railway museums and railway and locomotive operators, including over the inclined plane .
Trivia
In March 2012, the Harsdorf lever interlocking was replaced by an electronic interlocking. The new building containing the technology was built at a point where the gatekeeper blocked the view of part of the railway barrier. Therefore, a barrier observer was on site for 18 hours a day and reported to the gatekeeper via radio that the barrier had properly closed and reopened.
