The Itzgrundbahn is a former, eight kilometer long branch line from the Coburg district of Creidlitz to Rossach ( community Großheirath ).
The single-track line with a gauge of 1435 millimeters ( standard gauge ) was not electrified.
history
In 1892 a railway committee was founded to connect the communities of the Duchy of Saxony-Coburg in Itzgrund to the railway network. The efforts lasted eight years until the villages received their railway connection on December 4, 1900, starting from the Werra Railway near Creidlitz . They had to provide the necessary land free of charge. The Coburg state parliament approved 297,000 marks for the construction of the route.
Efforts to extend the route to Kaltenbrunn in the lower part of Itzgrund to the Breitengüßbach – Dietersdorf railway line opened in 1913 were never realized despite the 6.7 kilometer gap. The reasons were initially in competition with the 15 kilometer longer main line Lichtenfels – Bamberg , later the financial means were lacking and finally the line Lichtenfels – Coburg was electrified.
The line belonged to the Prussian State Railways and was administered by the Reichsbahndirektion Erfurt until 1945 .
In the course book of the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft it had the number 165e . In 1934 there were four passenger trains daily in each direction with a travel time of around 30 minutes for the 13 kilometers between Coburg and Rossach.
In the timetable of the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) it was to be found under 419e until 1970 , after which the 832 was valid until 1992 . Steam locomotives of the 86 series and railcars of the VT 70 series , later diesel locomotives of the 280 and 211 series as well as the rail bus were used by the DB until 1970 . From 1982 the train service was stopped on weekends and on June 2, 1984 the passenger train traffic ended completely.
Freight traffic prevailed due to the loading of clay from the Gottfried clinker works in Großheirath, for which an elevated loading street and a weighbridge were available. In addition, there were siding for a freight forwarding company and a steel dealer in Niederfüllbach . Until June 10, 2001, the steel trader was still receiving around 15,000 tons of steel annually by rail.
On the two-kilometer-long section Großheirath – Rossach, wagonload traffic was stopped on January 1, 1995 and the section was closed on September 1, 1995. 2001 followed in April the approval for the closure and the cessation of operations on the rest of the route and on July 31, 2001 the complete closure. A farewell trip took place on July 8, 2001.
In 2005 the tracks were dismantled and a cycle path was built that uses the former railway line on the Creidlitz – Meschenbach and Großheirath – Rossach sections.
route
The greatest decisive inclination was 1: 100, the smallest arc radius 300 meters. The train stations in Siemau-Scherneck, Großheirath and Rossach were built with red brickwork. Due to its proximity to Creidlitz station, the Niederfüllbach stop was closed again soon after the line opened.
In 1983 the route between Meschenbach and Untersiemau was re-routed due to the expansion of federal highway 4 . A tunnel-like bridge structure was built for the junction of the then federal highway 289 .
