Oberschwappach

Oberschwappach is a district of the municipality of Knetzgau in the Haßberge district in Bavaria with about 550 inhabitants , located on the northern edge of the Steigerwald .

Oberschwappach was first mentioned in a document in 1336 on the occasion of the sale of goods on the Eichelberg. Oberschwappach belongs to the parish of Knetzgau as a Catholic parish and to Westheim as a Protestant .

  • The Oberschwappach castle was in the 18th century from the monastery Ebrach built to represent, but hardly used. After secularization it changed hands several times and is now owned by the Knetzgau community.
  • A few years before the castle was built, the baroque Catholic parish church of St. Barbara was built. This goes back to a system of the late 16th century; the nave was completed in 1721.
  • The Oberschwappach cabaret artist Otmar Schmelzer runs the stupid Weindunstbühne on his farm .
