Friedrich Deml

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Deml (born February 15, 1901 in Ebrach ; † November 14, 1994 in Bamberg ) is a former high school teacher and German writer .

Life

Deml was born into a farming family in Ebrach . He studied German , history , art history , geography and geopolitics in Munich and Vienna . During this time he found access to literature. His role model was Friedrich Nietzsche , in whom he believed he recognized a beacon of the future.

As early as 1923 Deml was actively working on the first National Socialist combat newspaper in Regensburg . During this time he composed a kind of mystery play in prose with the title The Antichrist . As a result, he came into closer contact with the poet Hans Brandenburg , which developed into a friendship that did not break off after Deml worked as a teacher in Upper Silesia . After completing his studies, he was for two years Studienassessor at school in Leobschütz / OS , then at the Monastery School in Opole , and 1934 teacher and seminar leader in Gliwice . During his stay in Silesia, which he perceived as "exile", he wrote two volumes of poetry, some radio plays and several short stories and novels .

Hans Brandenburg, who had previously read and criticized Deml's manuscripts, campaigned for his friend to return to Franconia after ten years of teaching in 1938 and then to teach in Bamberg as a teacher at the Lyceum. At the suggestion of Hans Brandenburg, Deml was elected as the first new member of the Bamberg poets' group in 1938 . He found recognition there, took part in all public events of the group of poets and also read from his works. Following the poets 'meeting in Bamberg in 1938, the establishment of the ETA Hoffmann Society was proclaimed with the help of the Bamberg poets' circle; On this occasion, the anthology Round Table was published by E. Th. A. Hoffmann in 1939 , which contains two texts by Friedrich Deml.

In the first years of the war Deml organized several E. T. A. Hoffmann celebrations in association with the National Socialist organization Kraft durch Freude . After the war, only Deml's collaboration as deputy chairman of the ETA Hoffmann Society with a few contributions for the communications of the ETA Hoffmann Society reminded of the no longer existing group of poets .

Deml's volume of novels Das earthische Abenteuer with its Christian motto “Faith and Power” caused offense in 1938, especially in the NSDAP , because a reviewer recommended “handing Deml over to the Kremlin in case the court poet's place […] is soon through one of the usual shots in the neck should be released ”. This denunciating criticism had no consequences, however, since the National Socialists did not want to deny him his "will to the natural values of home, people, empire, nation". Deml's propagated religiosity did not contradict the idea of national mission, because for him the idea of the Reich was closely linked to his faith. From his point of view, the purposeful struggle for the German living space in Europe was a geopolitical reality. Until he was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1942, Deml took part in NSDAP cultural and political events in order to underline his credibility with the party.

After being called up, he was deployed in Norway and, according to his own statement, was a member of the German-Norwegian resistance movement in the vicinity of Moltke - Steltzer , who were close to the Kreisau district . Deml's time as a soldier in Norway ended in captivity ; released from it, he stayed for two years in Schleswig-Holstein , where he began a two-year activity under Prime Minister Steltzer.

In 1947 Deml returned to Bamberg and initially taught at the Lyceum, then moved to the ETA Hoffmann Gymnasium in 1953 and from 1960 also taught folklore and local history at the Pedagogical University . In the post-war period Deml continued to publish short stories and volumes of poetry. In his novella Kleist in Würzburg , dedicated to Heinrich von Kleist , which appeared for the first time in 1937 in the anthology Das irdische Abenteuer and in 1962 in a separate edition without significant corrections, he describes Kleist's search for meaning and mission in his life.

Deml's allegation from 1954 that the city of Bamberg had simply abandoned his colleagues from Bamberg's circle of poets is astonishing in view of the fact that some of these authors continued to appear as staunch National Socialists after 1945. Deml's visionary plan to establish a new group of poets with a Christian-occidental tendency remained a pious wish of the author. This was not detrimental to his literary orientation: He wrote a play called The Hour of Pilate , which was performed in March 1955 in the secularized Dominican Church in Bamberg, which was used culturally at the time , but was not published.

As one of the few remaining members of the Bamberg Poets 'Circle , Friedrich Deml was once again the focus of attention on the anniversary of the liberation , May 8, 1985, in Bamberg, the exhibition The Bamberg Poets' Circle. 1936–1943 was opened in the Bamberg State Library . During the opening of the exhibition there was a scandal between the audience and Deml about his work in National Socialism. This debate was then continued in letters to the editor of the local newspaper Fränkischer Tag between the initiator of the exhibition, Wulf Segebrecht , and Deml's son and his son-in-law, as to whether Deml should be classified as a follower of the National Socialist regime or a resistance fighter . In 1994, at a reading of selected works by Deml, people in Bamberg asked themselves whether this author was susceptible to the ideology of the Third Reich . Deml's story Der Faltbootfahrer from 1933 provoked a particular discomfort in the audience after the reading.

His literary work consists of poetry , novels , short stories, plays and essays , radio plays and a libretto . Numerous poems and stories by Deml are characterized by religious themes. Friedrich Deml died very old in 1994 in Bamberg.
