Peter Burschel (forest scientist)

Peter Burschel (born September 16, 1927 in Kassel ; † July 23, 2013 ) was a German forest scientist .

Career

Burschel received his doctorate in 1955 and completed his habilitation in 1961. From 1966 to 1972 he was Professor of Silviculture and Director of the Instituto de Silvicultura y Reforestación at the Universidad Austral de Chile . From 1972 to 1994 he was professor for silviculture and forest management at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . Until 1997 he was Codirector of the Centro Investigación y Extensión Forestal Andino Patagonico in Esquel (Argentina).

He created important foundations for understanding the regeneration ecology of beech and mountain mixed forests and was a pioneer in the field of influencing the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere through forestry measures.

As the head of the university forest , Burschel relied early on higher kills for hoofed game in order to ensure natural regeneration of the forest. Burschel was also one of the founding members of the Ökologische Jagdverein Bayern (ÖJV Bayern).

In 1994 he received an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Dresden "in recognition of the outstanding scientific achievements in the field of forestry research".
