The Pierce County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Blackshear .

The county is located in southeast Georgia, about 90 km from both the Atlantic Ocean and the northern Florida border, and covers 891 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Wayne County , Brantley County , Ware County , Bacon County, and Appling County .

history

Pierce County was formed on December 8, 1857 as the 119th County of Georgia from parts of Ware County. It was named after Franklin Pierce , the 14th President of the United States.

According to the 2010 census, the then 18,758 inhabitants were distributed over 7,083 inhabited households, which results in an average of 2.63 people per household. There are a total of 7,986 households.

74.4% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.05 people. There were children under the age of 18 in 37.7% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 26.6% of all households.

28.7% of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.7% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.2% were 40 to 59 years old, and 20.3% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 38 years. 49.1% of the population were male and 50.9% were female.

86.9% of the population identified themselves as whites, 8.9% as African-Americans , 0.4% as Indians and 0.3% as Asian Americans . 2.2% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.4% to several ethnic groups. 4.7% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 42,730 USD , while 19.9% of the population lived below the poverty line.
