Jack Mitchell (born September 13, 1925 in Key West , Florida - † November 7, 2013 in New Smyrna Beach , Florida) was an American photographer who became famous for his photographs of American dancers, artists, actors, musicians and writers.

Live and act

Early years

Mitchell's family moved to New Smyrna Beach, Florida in 1932. Jack Mitchell began taking photos at the age of eleven. First he assisted his sister with work in the darkroom and was then able to publish his own photographs in the Daytona News Journal and New Smyrna Beach News . Already at the age of 15 he was paid for his photographs after he had passed an examination and was thus the youngest photographer in Florida. His first nationally published photo portrait appeared in The Complete Photographer at the time .

After serving as a photographer in the US Army in Florence and Venice , Mitchell moved from Florida to New York City in 1950 , where he focused on dance on the advice of dancer and choreographer Ted Shawn . In 1957 he met Robert Pavlik (1932-2009), who became his business and life partner.

Career

From 1960 to 1970, Jack Mitchell was the official photographer for the American Ballet Theater . He has also made recordings for the Boston Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Pennsylvania Ballet, Houston Ballet, Martha Graham Dance Company, New York City Ballet and the Paul Taylor Dance Company. Photographs by leading international groups have appeared in the New York Times and Dance Magazine . His pictures appeared in the New York Times from 1970 to 1995. When he closed his New York studio on December 17, 1995, the newspaper devoted a full-page article to him.

Portrayed personalities

The personalities, often portrayed in black and white by Jack Mitchell , whose pictures have been published in leading newspapers and magazines, include Leonard Bernstein , Truman Capote , Keith Haring , Alfred Hitchcock , Rudolf Nurejew , Meryl Streep , John Updike , Andy Warhol , Tennessee Williams and others Natalie Wood .

Mitchell's portraits of John Lennon and Yoko Ono were taken in Mitchell's studio on East 74th Street for the New York Times on November 2, 1980, shortly before Lennon's death, and a motif was published in the Lennon Memorial Edition of People magazine in December 1980 . Twelve photographs of Lennon and Ono are published in Yoko Ono's book: John Lennon: Summer of 1980 . It was released in New York in 1983.

Jack Mitchell most recently lived and worked in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

Movie

Craig Highberger's 2006 documentary about Mitchell's life and work, Jack Mitchell: My Life Is Black And White, features a large number of his photographs and includes interviews with many of the people portrayed, including Edward Albee , Clive Barnes , Merce Cunningham , Patti LuPone and Ned Rorem .
