Grant-Valkaria is a city in Brevard County in the US state of Florida with 3850 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Grant-Valkaria borders directly on the cities of Malabar and Palm Bay . The city is located about 70 km south of Titusville and about 100 km southwest of Orlando .

history

Since the 1880s, the Grant and Valkaria settlements existed within the boundaries of Brevard County. With a resolution of July 25, 2006, these two municipalities were merged into one incorporated city by means of a referendum and combined as a municipality and city administration Grant-Valkaria.

Grant has made a name for itself over the years as a fish town, with an annual seafood festival .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 3850 inhabitants were distributed among 1767 households. 91.4% of the population identified themselves as whites , 3.9% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 1.6% as Asian Americans . 0.9% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.8% to several ethnic groups. 4.6% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 32.1% of all households lived in 21.9% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 74.0% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.43 people and the average family size was 2.75 people.

18.6% of the population were younger than 20 years, 12.3% were 20 to 39 years old, 40.8% were 40 to 59 years old, and 28.3% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 51 years. 50.1% of the population were male and 49.9% were female.

The median annual income was $ 54,906, with 4.0% of the population living below the poverty line.

Culture

Bensen House

The Grant Seafood Festival has been held every year in the last week of February since 1966 .

The historic Bensen House was built by Atley Bensen in 1916 and is now the museum and headquarters of the Grant Historical Society .

On June 25, 1999, Jorgensen's General Store was added to the National Register of Historic Places .

Grant-Valkaria is crossed by Interstate 95 and US Highway 1 ( SR 5 ). The nearest airport is Melbourne International Airport (around 20 km north).
