Astronaut Hall of Fame
The Astronaut Hall of Fame in Titusville , Florida, is a public tribute to American astronauts . It houses the world's largest collection of astronaut memorabilia and is part of the Kennedy Space Center visitor complex .
history
In the 1980s, the six surviving Mercury Seven members decided to build a memorial exclusively for astronauts. The Mercury Seven Foundation and the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation sponsored this project. The Hall of Fame was opened on October 29, 1990, had to close temporarily in 2002 due to bankruptcy, but was then reopened after NASA had taken over the sponsorship.
Exhibits
The Sigma 7 , Walter Schirra's Mercury spaceship and the Apollo 14 command module are on display .
The space suit and other items from the Mercury-Redstone 4 mission by Gus Grissom were also on display. After the bankruptcy, there was legal repercussions for ownership of these exhibits because the von Grissom family refused to allow NASA to take possession of these items.
Members
Members are all seven Mercury astronauts and 37 astronauts of the Gemini and Apollo projects. In addition, 26 space shuttle astronauts are currently members of the Hall of Fame.
