NASA
In 1985 he was elected to NASA's 11th astronaut group and trained as a space shuttle pilot. During his apprenticeship he worked many shifts as a liaison speaker ( Capcom ).
STS-45
On his first space mission, Duffy flew into space as a pilot on March 24, 1992 with the space shuttle Atlantis . The mission carried the first Atmospheric Laboratory for Applications and Science (ATLAS-1) onto two Spacelab pallets in the cargo bay of the shuttle and ended with the landing on April 2, 1992 at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
STS-57
On his second space flight, Duffy flew again as a pilot with the Endeavor from June 21 to July 1, 1993 . The aim of the mission was to recover the ESA's EURECA platform and to carry out scientific experiments in the Spacelab. It landed again directly in the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
STS-72
The third flight brought him back into space with the Endeavor from January 11-20, 1996, but this time as the mission's commander. The main points of the work program of the Endeavor crew were the capture of the Japanese experimental platform SFU (Space Flyer Unit, four tons of mass, launch in March 1995), the launching of the SPARTAN 206 satellite for two days and the completion of various tests during two spacecraft work. There were also a number of secondary experiments in the payload bay and middle deck of the space shuttle . It landed again directly in the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
STS-92
He made his fourth flight again as commander from October 11th - 24th, 2000 with the Discovery , it was the hundredth start of a space shuttle. This mission took him to the International Space Station (ISS) for the first time , where various construction work was carried out by his crew so that the first long-term crew could occupy the station.
