Country statistics of manned spaceflight

Map of the countries whose nationals have completed a space flight

Overview of the first space travelers in each country

Since the first space flight carried out by the Soviet Union , space travelers from 38 countries have flown into space. The first mission is listed for each nation. The list refers to the nationality at the time of the space flight.

In the first few years only Soviet and American space travelers flew into space. It wasn't until 17 years after Gagarin's first flight that a spaceman from a third nation flew into space. In the following years more and more cosmonauts from the Eastern Bloc were able to fly with Soviet spaceships as part of the Interkosmos program .

Country statistics according to the number of spacemen and total time in space

As of December 14, 2016, this overview shows the number of space travelers that each country has launched into space, as well as their total duration. It counts all space travelers who have completed at least one orbit of the earth.

The difference between the USA and the former Soviet Union is due to the technologies used in each case. While an American space shuttle can fly up to eight space travelers on short missions, the Russian Soyuz spacecraft has a maximum of three. Since the 1970s, Soviet and now Russian space travel has been geared towards operating space stations in orbit for long periods of time and using their spaceships for feeder services. American space travel, on the other hand, used space shuttles to carry out research or to expose payloads on comparatively short missions on board.

In the table above, Americans with dual citizenship Ansari , Foale , Garriott , Patrick , Sellers and Simonyi are included in the USA, and the British-South African citizen Shuttleworth is counted as South Africa. Therefore Iran is not listed and only two out of fourteen space flights are given for the UK; likewise only one of three for Hungary.

Remek and Jähn were citizens of Czechoslovakia and the GDR respectively at the time of their space flight .

Remarks

  1. In 1991 the Soviet Union broke up into the independent states of Armenia , Azerbaijan , Belarus , Estonia , Georgia , Kazakhstan , Kyrgyzstan , Latvia , Lithuania , Moldova , Russia , Tajikistan , Turkmenistan , Ukraine and Uzbekistan . At the time of the breakup, Sergei Krikalev and Alexander Volkov were on board the Mir . They started out as Soviet citizens and ended up as Russian citizens. Alexander Kaleri and Alexander Viktorenko were then the first citizens of Russia in space.
  2. In 1993, Czechoslovakia was divided into the Czech and Slovak Republics
  3. On October 3, 1990, the GDR joined the Federal Republic of Germany . Ulf Merbold was the first all-German space traveler in 1992.
