Mirosław Hermaszewski (born September 15, 1941 in Lipniki , Volhynia ) is a former Polish pilot , cosmonaut and politician . He was the first Pole in space .

Life

Hermaszewski was born during the German occupation of Poland in Lipniki, a district of the rural municipality of Bereźne in Volhynia , which at that time belonged to the Reich Commissariat of Ukraine .

In 1971 Hermaszewski was a graduate of the General Staff Academy in Warsaw . The pilot of the Polish Air Force was accepted into the Interkosmos program as a cosmonaut on November 25, 1976 . In 1978 he flew with the Soyuz 30 as a research cosmonaut with the third guest team to the Salyut 6 space station . When he landed on July 5, 1978, Hermaszewski retired from the cosmonaut corps.

Hermaszewski attended the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR "KJ Voroshilov" in Moscow, where he successfully completed his studies in 1982. In 1981 he was one of twenty officers on the "Military Committee for National Rescue of Poland". He later became a Brigadier General and Commander of the Officers' College of the Polish Air Force ( Wyższa Szkoła Oficerska Sił Powietrznych ) in Dęblin . Hermaszewski was later Chief of Aviation Security in the Polish Air Force and advisor to the Defense Minister of Poland. In 2005 he retired.

At the request of his children, he received the international award as Cavalier of the Order of Smiles .

Hermaszewski is married and has two children. His daughter Emilia is the wife of the conservative politician Ryszard Czarnecki .
