Hassa al-Mansuri ( Arabic هزاع المنصوري, DMG Hazzāʿ al-Manṣūrī ; born December 13, 1983 in Al Wathba ) is a military pilot and the first astronaut from the United Arab Emirates . Its first space flight led to the International Space Station (ISS) in September 2019 and lasted a week.
Education and military career
Al-Mansuri was born in al-Wathba , a suburb of Abu Dhabi , and grew up in the nearby al-Dhafra region. He obtained a bachelor's degree in aeronautics from the Khalifa bin Zayed Air College in al-Ain . He became the youngest pilot in the Emirates Air Force and last flew the F-16 fighter jet . Al-Mansuri trained F-16 pilots and was an aerobatic pilot with this jet.
Astronaut activity
In 2017, the United Arab Emirates' manned space program was launched. Hassa al-Mansuri applied as one of 4022 astronaut candidates. After a multi-stage selection process, the decision was made in September 2018 that, together with Sultan al-Nejadi, he would form the first space travel group in the Emirates. Since then, both have trained at the Yuri Gagarin cosmonaut training center near Moscow.
Al-Mansuri was initially scheduled to be a crew member of the Soyuz MS-12 ISS feeder flight in April 2019. After the Soyuz MS-10 failed start , the crew planning for the space station changed. Al-Mansuri, along with Oleg Skripotschka and Jessica Meir, was assigned to the Soyuz MS-15 ISS mission , which flew to the space station on September 25, 2019. There he was responsible, among other things, for the supervision of 16 experiments from his home country, which had been designed in 16 different schools as part of the Science in Space competition . Al-Mansuri's return flight took place on October 3, 2019 with Soyuz MS-12.
Private
Al-Mansuri is married and has four children.
