Pedro Francisco Duque Duque (born March 14, 1963 in Madrid ) is a former Spanish astronaut and current politician. He was the first and so far only Spaniard in space. He has been the Spanish Minister of Science since June 6, 2018.

education

In 1986 Duque graduated from the Polytechnic University of Madrid with a degree in aeronautical engineering . He worked for ESA for six years before being selected as a candidate for a space flight in 1992.

Spaceman

Duque trained in Russia and the United States . His first space flight was aboard the space shuttle mission STS-95 as a mission specialist. In October 2003, Duque visited the International Space Station with Soyuz TMA-3 for a week . After his space flight he supported ESA as Director of Operations of the Spanish User Support and Operations Center (USOC) in Madrid, which is managed by the Instituto da Riva / Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (IDR / UPM). In October 2011 he returned to ESA after temporarily doing other work and became head of the Flight Operations Office at the Columbus Control Center (Col-CC) on the premises of the Space Control Center of the German Aerospace Center in Oberpfaffenhofen, Bavaria . In June 2017 he was a participant in the underwater mission NEEMO-22 .

Politician

Since June 6, 2018, Duque has been Minister for Science, Innovation and Universities in the Sánchez cabinet of the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez . In the Sanchez II cabinet , he has been Minister for Science and Innovation since January 13, 2020. He had to hand over responsibility for university policy to Manuel Castells .

Duque is married and has three children.
