life and career

Duell, was born in 1923 in the small town of Corinth with 6,000 inhabitants in Saratoga County, New York State as George William Duell. In his youth, his mother legally changed his name to Darwin William Duel. Duel, who was unable to develop a particularly strong relationship with either "George" or "Darwin", later called himself simply William.

Duell attended Green Mountain Junior College in Illinois and then studied at Illinois Wesleyan University and Yale University . A theater grant at GMC is named after him. He portrayed Andrew McNair in the Broadway version of 1776, which shaped him into a sought-after character actor who stayed throughout the show's season and never had an understudy for the role.

On screen, Duell became known in 1975 for his role as Jim Sefelt in the Oscar-winning drama One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by director Miloš Forman and later in 1982 as Johnny, the informant in the popular television series The Naked Pistol . Duell also played smaller roles again and again, such as in the film Damned to Silence as the Reverend or in The Staggering Ship as the butler .

William Duell died on December 22, 2011 at the age of 88 in Manhattan.
