Matthew Robert Bonner (born April 5, 1980 in Concord , New Hampshire ) is a retired American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 2004 to 2016 , including ten years for the San Antonio Spurs . His nickname "Red Rocket" is related to his red hair. Bonner's specialty was the three-point throw; with his 2.08 meters he was one of the best "big man" three-shooters in the league.

NBA career

Bonner was selected in the second round of the 2003 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls after attending the University of Florida . Before moving to the NBA, however, Bonner played for one season in the Italian Lega Basket Serie A for Pallacanestro Sicilia Messina.

He was then active for two seasons for the Toronto Raptors . From 2006 he played for the San Antonio Spurs , with whom he could become NBA champions in the 2006/07 season . In June 2014 Bonner won his second title with the Spurs. He was one of the Spurs' most popular players and was a fan favorite.

After Bonner last played for Spurs in the 2015/16 season, he announced his resignation in January 2017.

Personal

Matt Bonner is married to Nadia Bonner; he knows her from his time in Toronto. They have two children, Evangeline-Vesper (* 2009) and August (* 2012). Matt's younger brother Luke is also a professional basketball player. The two of them have a very good relationship, and Luke was the best man at his brother's wedding.

Matt often says of himself that he is "old school," which is to say that he is not very familiar with the latest technology. His hobbies are driving, often faster models, family activities, and he is a big fan of weight training.

Bonner is currently the basketball player with the best school leaving certificate (grade point average) from the University of Florida ; this is 3.96 GPA.
