Mars the Medici

The concert march Mars of the Medici (also known as the Marsch di Medici ) was composed in 1938 by the Dutchman Johan Wichers . The piece of music is considered one of the most important works of his career as the "Dutch March King" and enjoys a high degree of international recognition.

A special characteristic of the Medici Mars is its extremely melodic trio , in which dynamic changes and simple, but very sonorous harmonies are used. The melodic theme is first blown by the tenor horn , baritone and 1st trombone , followed by the flugelhorns and trumpets in the repetition . Finally, in the third part, a secondary melody from the clarinets is superimposed on the main melody .

The Mars Medici has nothing contrary to widespread acceptance with the same Italian noble family to do. Wichers dedicated it to the doctors ( Latin medici ) who treated him in 1938 during a long hospital stay. Probably in order to maintain the pleasant title, a corresponding translation into German was dispensed with.
