Bob Vila

Robert Joseph "Bob" Vila (born June 20, 1946 in Miami , Florida ) is a Cuban - American presenter of home improvement television programs. He was best known for This Old House (1979–1988; This old house) and Bob Vila's Home Again (Bob Vila is back home).

Vila graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism in 1969 . From 1971 to 1973 he served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Panama .

Vila received the Better Homes and Gardens ' Heritage House of 1978 award for restoring a Victorian-Italian home in Newton , Massachusetts . He was then hired to host This Old House . In 1989 he left the show, allegedly because of a looming conflict of interest through his stake in Sears . He was replaced by Steve Thomas. After his departure, Vila hosted the program Bob Vila's Home Again , which was later renamed Bob Vila .

Vila has published ten books, including a five-part book series called Bob Vila's Guide to Historic Homes of America .

Vila also made a number of appearances on various episodes of the fictional home improvement program Tool Time within the sitcom Listen, Who's Hammering . In a small supporting role he appeared in the American comedy film Hot Shots! The second attempt in which he sealed the house of Topper Harley.
