Philip Don Estridge
Philip Donald Estridge (born June 23, 1937 in Jacksonville , Florida , † August 2, 1985 in Dallas , Texas ) known as Don Estridge was an American computer engineer.
biography
Don Estridge was head of a development department at IBM in Boca Raton , Florida , which developed the "IBM Personal Computer 5150" ( IBM PC ) launched on August 12, 1981 . His decisions had a dramatic impact on the development of the computer industry and resulted in a huge increase in the number of computers sold. Contrary to the traditional IBM strategy, he relied on components from suppliers such as processors from Intel . On August 1, the development department was transformed into the Entry Systems Division , where Estridge remained active until March 1985. Don Estridge and his wife died on August 2, 1985 in the crash of Delta Air Lines Flight 191 at Dallas / Fort Worth Airport .
