The Steve Spurrier Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is a college football - stadium on the campus of the University of Florida in the US city of Gainesville in the state of Florida . It serves as the venue for the home games of the Florida Gators college football team . With a capacity of 88,548, the facility is the twelfth largest college football stadium. However, there are regularly audience numbers of over 90,000.
history
The sports facility was built in 1930 and was then still called Florida Field . It was built in a shallow depression and almost all of the original seats were below ground level. The capacity at that time was 22,000 spectators. In 1934, the stage was re-dedicated to the soldiers from Florida who lost their lives in the First World War lost.
Over the years, the stadium has been renovated several times and at the same time the audience capacity has mostly been expanded. Today it is the largest football stadium in Florida and the second largest sports facility in the state after Daytona International Speedway . The playing area also changed over the years. From 1971 on, artificial turf was played until 1990 when the new coach Steve Spurrier insisted that it be provided with natural turf again .
In 2016, the stadium name was supplemented by that of long-time coach Steve Spurrier, who left the coaching business in 2015. He won the first national college football title in 1996 with the Gators . The sports arena will be named Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium . A bronze statue of Spurrier will also be erected on the stadium grounds.
Events
Today the arena is mostly used for football games. Two bowl games were played here in 1973 and 1994 as other stadiums were being renovated. Many concerts used to take place at Florida Field. Sun spent about Bob Dylan , Joan Baez , Elton John and Jimmy Buffett here already concerts. But recently there were no more concerts. In order to avoid damage to the playing surface, the university decided to only use the stadium for sports events. The Rolling Stones gave their last concert in 1994.
