Gets was born in Chicago. However, his parents moved to New Jersey shortly after he was born and to Gainesville, Florida five years later . He learned the piano at the age of nine. After graduating from Fort Clarke Middle School, he graduated from Buchholz High School in Gainesville in 1980 and went to the University of Florida . Gets lives openly gay in the United States.
