Eddie Southern
Eddie Southern (actually Silas Edward Southern ; born January 4, 1938 in Dallas ) is a former American sprinter and hurdler .
In 1956 he was at the US eliminations for the Olympic Games in Melbourne second in the 400-meter hurdles with his personal best of 49.7 s behind Glenn Davis , who set a world record with 49.5 s. In Melbourne Southern was again beaten by Davis (50.1 s) with a time of 50.8 s, but won silver in front of Josh Culbreath (51.6 s), who completed the all-American podium.
In 1958 and 1959 Southern was US champion over 440 yards and over 400 m , respectively , in 1961 he won the national title over 600 yards in the hall. As a student at the University of Texas , he became an NCAA champion over 440 yards in 1959 .
