Bärbel Wöckel , née Bärbel Eckert (born March 21, 1955 in Leipzig ), is a former German athlete . She won four Olympic gold medals for the GDR in 1976 and 1980 in the 200-meter run and in the 4-by-100-meter relay . This makes her the most successful of all German athletes in terms of the number of gold medals and one of the six most successful athletes of all time (as of 2012).

Bärbel Wöckel trained at SC Motor Jena . She never set a world record in the individual disciplines. However, she ran in a team with Doris Maletzki , Renate Stecher and Christina Heinich multiple world records over 4 x 100 meters, the last time on September 8, 1974 in Rome . In the GDR championships, she took first place in the 4 x 100 meter relay in 1974, 1977, 1978, 1981 to 1984. In 1976 she won third place with the team. During this time she was in the state-organized doping program .

Sports career

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, she won the gold medal over 200 meters ahead of the narrowly defeated West German Annegret Richter (silver) and Renate Stecher (bronze), who also came from the GDR , as well as the team gold medal in the 4 x 100 Meter relay together with their teammates Marlies Oelsner , Renate Stecher and Carla Bodendorf in front of the West German (silver) and the Soviet team (bronze).

At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow she was able to repeat her Olympic success from 1976 and again won the gold medal in the 200-meter run in front of the Soviet sprinter Natalja Botschina and the Jamaican Merlene Ottey . She was also able to repeat the success in the relay race and won the team gold medal together with her teammates Romy Müller , Ingrid Auerswald and Marlies Göhr (née Oelsner) in front of the Soviet and British teams.

In both years, 1976 and 1980, she set an Olympic record with her victory over 200 meters.

At the European Championships in 1982 she was able to prevail over 200 meters by defeating Britain's Kathy Smallwood , but had to admit defeat in the 100-meter run Goehr.

With a height of 1.74 m, she had a competition weight of 62 kg.

Until the retirement in March 2018, Wöckel headed the youth department in the German Athletics Association (DLV).

Integration into the doping system of the GDR

In 1991, anti-doping opponents Brigitte Berendonk and Werner Franke were able to secure several dissertations and post-doctoral theses by former GDR doping researchers at the Bad Saarow Military Medical Academy . Based on the work, the state-organized doping practice of many well-known GDR competitive athletes, including Bärbel Wöckel, was reconstructed. According to the information, Wöckel was given high doses of Oral-Turinabol from 1983 to 1984 , plus several injections of testosterone- ester in 1983 and 1984. The medication with Oral-Turinabol for 1984 was 1670 milligrams.

Ines Geipel , in the season of the SC Motor Jena along with Wöckel, Auerswald and Göhr on 2 June 1984 in Erfurt had s by 4-100-meter relay team set the still valid German club record of 42.20 in, had her name deleted from the DLV record list in 2005 because of her involuntary involvement in the compulsory doping system. Wöckel eluded a public debate on this subject by saying that it was "so long ago".
