Rolf Back

Rolf Erik Vilhelm Back (born May 13, 1928 in Helsinki ; † August 6, 2009 in Porvoo ) was a Finnish athlete .

Rolf Back took part in a total of 14 events with the Finnish national team. At the European Championships in Brussels in 1950 , he retired as fourth in his semi-final over 400 meters in 49.2 seconds. The Finnish 4 x 400 meter relay with Jaakko Suikkari , Lennart Lindberg , Ragnar Graeffe and Rolf Back took sixth place in the final in 3: 16.6 minutes. At the 1952 Olympics in his hometown Helsinki Back was eliminated in the quarterfinals. The Finnish relay crossed the finish line in sixth place in the run-up and thus clearly missed the finals. At the European Championships in 1954 in Bern, Back reached the semi-finals on the individual route. The Finnish relay with Ragnar Graeffe, Sven-Oswald Mildh , Rolf Back and Voitto Hellsten set a new Finnish record in 3: 11.3 minutes. In the final, the four Finns crossed the finish line in 3: 11.5 minutes as third behind the relays from France and Germany.

In 1951 Back ran the Finnish 400 meter record in 47.7 seconds, the fastest time of his career. In 1950, 1951, 1952 and 1954 he was Finnish champion over 400 meters. With a height of 1.85 meters, his competition weight was around 70 kilograms.
