Mike Rawson (actually Michael Arthur Rawson; born May 26, 1934 in Hall Green , Birmingham ; † October 26, 2000 there ) was a British middle-distance runner . With a height of 1.78 m, his competition weight was 72 kg.

Career

As a 19-year-old Rawson had only a modest 2:30 minutes to record over 880 yards. However, he improved and won the AAA championship in 1: 51.3 minutes in 1956 . At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , he started in the 800-meter run . He was eliminated as fifth in his semifinals in 1: 50.4 minutes.

In 1958 Rawson's compatriot Brian Hewson won the AAA championship over 880 yards in front of Rawson and the Australian Herb Elliott . At the end of July at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff , Elliott won in 1: 49.32 minutes ahead of the two Englishmen Hewson in 1: 49.47 minutes and Rawson in 1: 50.94 minutes.

At the European Championships in Stockholm in mid-August, Elliott was not an Australian at the start, and Hewson competed in the 1,500-meter run , which he also won. Rawson won his preliminary run in 1: 50.4 minutes. In the semifinals he was only fourth in 1: 50.1 minutes behind the German Paul Schmidt , the Hungarian Lajos Szentgáli and the Norwegian Audun Boysen . The final turned out to be a very fast race, and Rawson won in 1: 47.8 minutes by a tenth of a second ahead of Boysen and Schmidt, both of whom he had sprinted over the last few meters. After crossing the finish line, Rawson was disqualified because of a bump in the first corner. He had to wait two hours for the jury to lift the disqualification and declare Rawson European champion.

Rawson ran his 800 meter best time of 1: 47.0 min also in 1958 in the international match against France as second behind Hewson. He was after his title from 1956 over 880 yards second in the years 1957 to 1959. He denied his last competition in 1965 when he won the AAA Indoor Championship over 440 yards in 49.6 s.

Mike Rawson was 1.78 m tall and weighed 72 kg at competition times. He was a member of the Birchfield Harriers .
