Walter Tschudi

Walter Tschudi (born December 17, 1933 ; † December 31, 2004 ) was a Swiss athlete .

He won several Swiss championship titles in the 1950s. In 1955, he also won the World Student Games, the precursor to the Universiade , in the pentathlon . Tschudi was scheduled to take part in the 1956 Olympic Games, but was not allowed to participate after the Swiss canceled participation due to the Hungarian popular uprising . At the European Athletics Championships in 1958 , he reached fifth place in the decathlon . In 1957 he was voted Swiss Sportsman of the Year .

Walter Tschudi improved the Swiss record in the decathlon twice: in 1957 in Brussels he improved Fritz Vogelsang's record by over 300 points to 7151 points (7103 points according to today's scoring). In 1959 he increased this record in Duisburg to 7299 points (7194). In 1967 Werner Duttweiler replaced him as the record holder. In 1958 he set a national record in Turin with the Swiss 4 x 400 meter relay.

Walter Tschudi had been a member of the LC Zurich since 1956 . After the end of his sporting career, he was President of the LCZ from 1962 to 1969.
