She has been the mayor of her hometown of Rome since June 22nd, 2016 .

Life

Raggi grew up in the Roman district of San Giovanni . After completing her school education, she studied law at the University of Rome III . She was admitted to the bar in Rome in October 2006. She specializes in copyright , patent and trademark law.

Raggi is married to a radio director and has one son.

politics

The decisive factor for Raggi to be politically active was the birth of her son. In the following time she was increasingly bothered by the infrastructural deficiencies in her hometown. In 2011 she became involved in a neighborhood committee for the first time. Through her husband she came into contact with the protest party MoVimento 5 Stelle ; both are founding members of their district association. In the local elections in 2013 she won a seat in the city parliament of Rome.

For the election of the mayor in June 2016, she applied within the M5S, and won the online vote held by the party with 1,764 votes. The city is considered "ungovernable", nepotism and self-enrichment as widespread; its officers are prone to corruption and have good contacts with organized crime , especially the mafia . The various political camps had taken turns ruling the city for decades without being able to solve its problems in the long term. The last mayor, Ignazio Marino , resigned in autumn 2015 after being accused of paying for several private meals with his business credit card. The allegations have since turned out to be baseless.

In the run-up to the election, observers reckoned Raggi had good chances, especially since neither the left nor the right could agree on a common candidate. But critics criticized her populist election campaign and also doubted that she was able to Roman Augean stables to clean out. Her suggestions are unrealistic, she lacks the experience and she is actually just a "puppet" of M5S founder Beppe Grillo . In addition, she concealed an internship that she had done with Cesare Previti , the former defense minister ; he is considered an ally of the former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi .

In the election on June 5, 2016, she achieved the best result with 35.25% of the vote, followed by the candidate of the Partito Democratico of Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and Vice-President of the House of Representatives , Roberto Giachetti (24.87%), that of FdI-AN and Lega Nord supported Giorgia Meloni (20.64%) and Alfio Marchini from Forza Italia and Nuovo Centrodestra (10.97%). Since none of the candidates achieved the required absolute majority, there was a runoff election. Raggi was the favorite against Giachetti (PD). The chairman of the Lega Nord, Matteo Salvini , had called on its supporters before the first round to vote for Raggi in a runoff election. Raggi prevailed with 67.15% of the vote; Giachetti admitted his defeat after the first projections.

It took her six weeks to put her cabinet together. When choosing her employees, she had to take her own party into account. So she has z. B. obliged to pay a five-figure sum out of their own pocket if they do not do the party's will. The new mayor encountered particular resistance from the municipal garbage disposal and local public transport , which demonstrated their power with tens of thousands of employees. Reforms z. B. in garbage disposal are not done, although they have been urgently needed for years. Mountains of rubbish piled up in some Roman city quarters, while the employees of the municipal waste disposal company AMA did their job according to regulations and drove their usual tours.

On December 16, 2016, Raffaele Marra, who was considered Raggi's right-hand man, was arrested for bribery. A few days earlier, Paola Muraro had resigned as head of the environment, against whom the public prosecutor was investigating for corruption. Thereupon Beppe Grillo traveled to Rome and arranged that Vice Mayor Daniele Frongia and the head of the secretariat, Salvatore Romeo, resign.
