Roberto Giachetti (born April 24, 1961 in Rome ) is an Italian politician . As a member of the Partito Democratico , he was Deputy President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies from 2013 to 2018 .

Life

Roberto Giachetti took eighteen years of Radicale Partito by Marco Pannella at. In 1989 he was elected to the city parliament of the capital Rome for the Federazione dei Verdi . From 1993 to 2001 he was head of the cabinet of the Mayor of Rome, Francesco Rutelli .

In 2001 he was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies for the first time as a co-founder of the Democrazia è Libertà - La Margherita party, to which he has belonged ever since. In the 2006 elections he was on the list of the center-left alliance L'Ulivo , in the 2008 elections on the list of the Partito Democratico (PD). After the 2013 elections , he was elected one of the deputy presidents of the Chamber of Deputies. In the mayoral elections in Rome on June 5, 2016, he stood as a candidate for the center-left alliance at the request of party leader Matteo Renzi . In the runoff election on June 19, he was defeated by Virginia Raggi , the candidate for Movimento 5, with 33% of the vote .

As a direct candidate in the constituency of Tuscany 3 ( Sesto Fiorentino ), he was elected to the Camera dei deputati for a further legislative period in the 2018 parliamentary elections. Since then he has been chairman of the Chamber of Deputies' electoral commission and is also a member of the EU Policy Committee. After Renzi's resignation from the party chairmanship, Giachetti stood in the primary election of a new party chairman in March 2019 . He represented the wing of the Renzi loyalists ("Renziani") , which tended towards the political center , but only came third with around 188,000 votes (12 percent). He then founded the Semper Avanti Foundation with Anna Ascani as an internal party organization of the Renziani . In September 2019 Giachetti left the PD and joined the Italia Viva party founded by Matteo Renzi .
