José Luis Astigarraga Lizarralde
José Luis Astigarraga Lizarralde CP (born May 4, 1940 in Azkoitia ; † January 20, 2017 in Yurimaguas , Peru ) was a Spanish religious and retired Apostolic Vicar of Yurimaguas .
Life
José Luis Astigarraga Lizarralde joined the religious community of Passionists and was ordained a priest on February 1, 1964 .
Pope John Paul II appointed him Titular Bishop of Buleliana and Vicar Apostolic of Yurimaguas on November 26, 1991 . The Apostolic Nuncio in Peru, Archbishop Luigi Dossena , donated him episcopal ordination on February 29 of the following year ; Co - consecrators were Venancio Celestino Orbe Uriarte CP, Prelate of Moyobamba , and Miguel Irízar Campos CP, Coadjutor Bishop of Callao .
Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on December 17, 2016.
He became known as a mediator of various social conflicts around drug trafficking and terrorism.
In 2016, José Luis Astigarraga was honored with the Medalla de Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo by the Peruvian Bishops' Conference for his commitment in the Amazon region and in the jungles of Peru.
