Pro Ruhr area

Pro Ruhrgebiet is a private, non-profit association with the aim of promoting structural change in the Ruhr area , based in Essen . The association, founded in 1981, is based on more than 350 member companies from various industries.

The goals of the association are

  • strengthening the citizens' identification with the Ruhr area
  • the promotion of culture
  • Promotion of sport

The association promotes the RuhrTriennale cultural event and advocates the perception of the Ruhr area as a Ruhr city .

Since 1981 the association has conferred the honorary title Citizen of the Ruhr Area . The award is given to people who have made outstanding contributions to the Ruhr area with their work. In addition to a person nominated and selected directly by the board of directors, the award has been given annually since 2004 to a person from the Ruhr area who is suggested from the local population. Every year the subject changes on which the merits of the proposed person should focus, so that achievements in the most varied of areas can be recognized. In 2009, for example, merits in the area of engagement of immigrants in the Ruhr area for integration were honored.

With a view to the award of the Ruhr area as cultural capital 2010 , the association coordinated the project Hot Spot Ruhr with the aim of equipping the Ruhr area with wireless internet access across the board.

The association is also a partner in Kultur Ruhr GmbH .
