The buckle gate was probably built in the first half of the 16th century as part of the city fortifications in Steyr in the area between Steyrdorf and Tabor (today's Gleinkergasse and Franklin-D.-Roosevelt-Straße). The sgraffito decoration , which is similar to that of the Innerberger barn , dates from 1613, as indicated by a date visible on the gate.

History and architecture

"Buckle" is a name for an ancient coin. The name Schnallentor thus refers to its original purpose as a toll station : If you wanted to go into the city by cart, you had to pay pavement toll . The upper part of Gleinkergasse is still popularly called Schnallenberg today. On January 1, 1920, the paving and bridge tolls in Steyr were abolished (decision of the Upper Austrian Landtag of November 4, 1919).

Although the building on the upper floor is equipped with loopholes , it probably had little strategic importance. After the city wall had been razed in 1857, the demolition of the buckle gate was also requested in 1875, which the local council rejected with a small majority. Another attempt in 1887 failed, probably not only because of the significant historical substance, but also because of the apartments furnished in it. Soon afterwards (1894) the building was comprehensively renovated and restored in its original form, including the sgraffiti. They were repaired again in 1952. Today's footpath around the gate dates from 1973. After the foundation of the gate was completely renovated in 2017, the facade and the vault were renovated in 2018.
